If I had a dollar for every time I’ve heard a real estate agent say ‘Oh, I tried Facebook Advertising and ‘it didn’t work!’’ I would be have retired and been living in the lap of luxury by now. Well, maybe not retired, but I’d have taken the family to Bali!

Why do they have such problems? Here’s what I’ve discovered.

Real Estate agents are some of the worst at dipping their toe into something, giving it a go (kind of) then throwing their hands up in the air when it doesn’t perform as well or as quickly as promised.

Sorry if that sounds a bit blunt, but I’ve worked with a lot of real estate agents and agencies!

I call it the ‘shiny product syndrome.’ Most of the real estate professionals I work with are always on the lookout for the next shiny system, shiny marketing tool or shiny publication that is going to guarantee them more leads, quick results and loads of sales.

Facebook Advertising is one of those and if you’re one who has dabbled in it, your experience might have looked something like this.

You got all excited when you first came across it and were maybe even inspired by the results of other real estate agents. So you jumped on board, learned a little, dabbled a little and maybe even got some results.

Then when it fell short of your expectations you decided ‘this doesn’t work’ and set your sights on something new. Some don’t even wait to see if one thing works and have several shiny products on the go at once. Let’s just try ‘everything’ – something’s bound to work!

The problem is you didn’t invest the time to dive deeply enough in Facebook Advertising to give it a good go – and get a good return.

I actually stumbled upon a proper term for this behaviour. It’s call short-termism and here’s the definition:

Short-termism: Concentration on short term projects or objectives for immediate profit at the expense of long term security.

Short-termism

Yep, that sounds like shiny product syndrome to me!

Remember most people in business have ‘tried’ Facebook. To these ‘short-termists’ it was just another shiny product. The word ‘try’ actually gives the game away. If you continue to ‘try’ things you’re most likely to end up disappointed. If however you ‘commit’ to Facebook Advertising and really dedicate the time and energy to master it, you WILL reap the benefits.

I have proven this time and time again working with real estate agents on successful campaigns.

One of the key factors is that Facebook is the place where your ideal clients hang out!

Take a look at this graph from Social Media News of Australian Facebook Users. It’s up-to-date at the time of this post, but you can always pop onto their website to see the latest figures.

Facebook Demographics in Australia

Check out the largest groups. Are you surprised?

There’s a common misconception that Facebook is for kids and young people, but the stats clearly show that’s not the case. Kids are leaving Facebook because their parents are on there ‘stalking’ them! I don’t blame them. They’re finding other platforms and that’s good news for real estate professionals.

There are now 15 million active Australians using Facebook. That’s a massive 60% of the total population. Here’s another big number for you – 50% of those active users log onto Facebook at least once a day. That’s every second person in Australia going onto Facebook at least once a day!

Have a think about it.

  • How old are your first home buyers?
  • How old are your homeowners who are looking to upgrade?
  • How old are your sellers who have a property and are now downsizing?

Look at the whopping big numbers beside your target demographics. They represent those young couples looking for their first home, parents looking to upsize and grandparents looking to downsize.

Facebook Advertising for real estate is a no-brainer!

So now the question is, how do you reach them? How do you take this Facebook Advertising marketing machine and really put it to work to build your real estate business?
